"The ability of the arrested drunk to talk the active drunk's language convincingly is the one revolutionary aspect of the A.A. technique, and it does much to explain why the approach so often succeeds after others have failed. The rest of the technique is a synthesis of already existing ideas, some of which are centuries old. Once a community of language and experience has been established, it acts as a bridge over which the rest of the A.A. message can be conveyed, provided the subject is receptive."

– Jack Alexander, from the March 1941, Saturday Evening Post article

"Serenity is not the absence of pain. Serenity is reaching beyond surface appearances into inner truth, knowing God is working for our highest good."

- Sandy Scott Siraco

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation."

attributed to Herbert Spencer in the AA text

"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.
Anyone who keeps learning is young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young."

- Henry Ford

"And the way to become truly useful is to seek the best that other brains have to offer. Use them to supplement our own, and give credit to them when they have helped."

- Gordon Dean

"The spirituality of imperfection speaks to those who seek meaning in the absurd, peace within the chaos, light within the darkness, joy within the suffering—without denying the reality and even the necessity of absurdity, chaos, darkness and suffering.
This is not a spirituality for the saints or the gods, but for people who suffer from feeling divided, fractured, and pulled in a dozen directions and who yearn for serenity, for some healing of our feeling 'torn-to-pieces'."

– Ernest Kurtz

"When you don't have any money, the problem is food. When you have money, it's sex. When you have both, it's health. If everything is simple, then you're frightened of death."

- J. P. Donleavy

TWENTY-NINE

Do you think you can take over the universe and improve it?
I do not believe it can be done.
The universe is sacred.
You cannot improve it.
If you try to change it, you will ruin it.
If you try to hold it, you will lose it.
So sometimes things are ahead and sometimes they are behind;
Sometimes breathing is hard, sometimes it comes easily;
Sometimes there is strength and sometimes weakness;
Sometimes one is up and sometimes down.
Therefore the sage avoids extremes, excesses, and complacency.

Lao Tsu, from TAO TE CHING

"For everything there is a season,
And a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, And a time to refrain
from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate,
A time for war, and a time for peace."

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8,
in the Bible

"Everyone must engage in some sort of activity in this material world. But actions can either bind one to this world or liberate one from it. By acting for the pleasure of the Supreme, without selfish motives, one can be liberated from the law of karma (action and reaction) and attain transcendental knowledge of the self and the Supreme."

– Bhagavad Gita, Chapter Three: Karma-yoga

"We could never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world."

– Helen Keller

“There are certain things that are fundamental to human fulfillment. The essence of these needs is captured in the phrase 'to live, to love, to learn, to leave a legacy'. The need to live is our physical need for such things as food, clothing, shelter, economical well-being, health. The need to love is our social need to relate to other people, to belong, to love and to be loved. The need to learn is our mental need to develop and to grow. And the need to leave a legacy is our spiritual need to have a sense of meaning, purpose, personal congruence, and contribution”

– Stephen R. Covey

Children are unpredictable. You never know what inconsistency they are going to catch you in next.

Gambling with cards or dice or stocks is all one thing. It's getting money without giving an equivalent for it.

Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody expects of you. Never excuse yourself.

I don't like these cold, precise, perfect people, who, in order not to speak wrong, never speak at all, and in order not to do wrong, never do anything.

– Henry Ward Beecher

"Instead of complaining because you don't get what you want, be thankful you don't get what you deserve."

- Finnish proverb

SPIRITUAL RESOURCES — Information and Recovery
Reliance on God ("the one who has all power") instead of self or an unhealthy reliance on others, is the intended outcome of fully working the 12-step program as set out by Alcoholics Anonymous. This is "recovery" as opposed to "hanging on to sobriety." This spiritual awakening/awareness is a continuing process of practicing the principles of the steps in all areas of our life on a daily basis.

Secular (non 12-step) Recovery
The 12 steps are about awareness, reliance, and growth -- in a relationship with God, as the individual understands God, instead of reliance on self. Therefore, these groups do not use the 12 steps based on AA's program of recovery. Athiests and Agnostics rely on self and others, as well as intellect and reason.
